Confidence is one of the most valuable traits a young dancer can develop. Whether stepping into a studio for the first time or preparing for a big performance, self-assurance allows dancers to express themselves, to be bold and take risks, and to grow artistically.

Here are some ways to share with your young dancers to help them build confidence and grow as performers (and as little people!).

1. Practice, Practice, Practice

Repetition is key to feeling comfortable with dance steps. Practicing at home reinforces what is learned in class and helps movements feel natural. Even just a few minutes each day can make a big difference in skill and confidence.

2. Build Courage to Perform in Front of Others

Dancing in front of an audience—whether it’s family, classmates, or a recital crowd—can be nerve-wracking. Encourage your young dancer to start small by practicing in front of a mirror or a friend, then gradually build up to larger groups. Remember, everyone in the audience wants them to succeed!

3. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously—Have Fun!

Mistakes happen, and that’s okay! Dance is about expression and joy. Instead of worrying about being perfect, focus on enjoying the movement and the music. When dancers let go of fear, their confidence shines.

4. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

Every small improvement is a victory. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on how far you’ve come. Acknowledge personal achievements, whether it’s mastering a new step or simply feeling more comfortable in class.

5. Use Positive Self-Talk

Words matter. Encourage young dancers to replace thoughts like “I can’t do this” with “I am learning, and I will get better.” A positive mindset builds resilience and confidence over time.

Confidence in dance grows with practice, courage, and a little bit of fun. Encourage young dancers to believe in themselves, and they will shine both on and off the dance floor!
